Matthieu Bonne impressively broke the world record by cycling solo for 3619.72 kilometers in just 7 days.
Adventurer and boundary-pusher Matthieu Bonne broke the world record this week in Phoenix, Arizona by solo cycling the greatest distance ever covered in 7 days. It was an incredible achievement, with Bonne cycling over 500 km per day and having only 2.5 hours of sleep over the 7 days. After completing his effort in the early hours of the morning, Bonne stated that this was probably the toughest week of his life. The fact that he spent 20 hours a day on the bike and received so little sleep had a huge impact on his body. On the last day, he could hardly sit on his saddle, and even touching his legs was excruciatingly painful. Nevertheless, Bonne managed to keep going, with the motivation to inspire others and show that anything is possible if you believe in it. His mind proved to be much stronger than he had anticipated. Bonne was accompanied by a team of 5 people during his record attempt, and the idea of disappointing them was even more challenging for him than the physical challenge itself.
Together with my parents, I started working on the idea of breaking the world record for solo cycling in 7 days. We searched for a suitable location and Phoenix, Arizona in the United States proved to be the perfect place because of its impressive landscape and favorable climate. But it was precisely that climate that almost threw a wrench in the works. On the third day, I had to take shelter for 3 hours due to a heavy storm. In a week where every minute counts and every kilometer is important, this was a major setback. Luckily, I had built up a margin with my strong first day. But the wind remained a challenge, especially in the last few days. At the beginning of the 5th day, it was clear that it would be very exciting to break the world record, which Bonne ultimately succeeded in doing with an improvement of over 30 kilometers.
Matthieu's record attempt was meticulously planned. Two teams of two people were with him for 11 hours each day, each with a clear task distribution before and after returning to the base camp in Phoenix. There was always one car with Matthieu for supplies and technical support. From the third day onwards, a fifth person was present to step in where necessary and relieve the other teams. Sleeping from 12:15 am to 3 am, leaving every day at 3:30 am (except the first day), and cycling until midnight. Every minute was planned in advance to leave nothing to chance, and there was no moment of rest during the entire record attempt.
The life goal of Matthieu Bonne from Bredene is to achieve things that have never been done before. At just 29 years old, he has already accomplished impressive challenges such as the Marathon des Sables, an Ironman, climbing Mont Blanc, and being the first ever to swim the entire Belgian coast. Many people also know him from Kamp Waes, and last year he completed eight full triathlons on eight different Canary Islands.
The idea for this world record arose during Bonne's search for records that appealed to him and were also sufficiently challenging. Later this year, he has other record attempts planned.
Matthieu covered a distance of 3,619.72 kilometers on his bike in seven days. He burned an average of 10,000 calories per day and, in addition to traditional sports nutrition, also ate hamburgers, pasta, American cookies, and a lot of M&M's. Interestingly, he only had one flat tire. Matthieu had to cycle in temperatures ranging from 2 to 25 degrees Celsius and was followed by three watches and two trackers to record his data. Matthieu's record is officially recognized by the WUCA and Guinness World Records.
